Celebrating the Small Wins Sustain Us

In the fight for justice, we must learn to pause and honor the incremental victories that carry us forward.

As advocates and changemakers, we’re taught to keep our eyes fixed on the horizon — the policy change, the systems-level win, the big victory that feels like transformation. We talk about needing to “keep our foot on their necks” because we know how relentless the opposition to justice can be. The fight is far from over, and the stakes are high.

But I recently got an important reminder that we can’t survive on deferred joy. If we never pause to celebrate the incremental wins that get us closer, we risk starving ourselves — and our teams — of the hope and energy we need to press on.

“We can’t survive on deferred joy.”

This lesson was brought home for me as we celebrated at Ayoku Healing Retreat Center.  We just finished our phase 1 renovations and invited some colleagues to visit the space. I’ve been in knots over the uphill battles: stalled permitting, the grind of fundraising, the sheer weight of birthing a vision of this magnitude. So I was anxious and overwhelmed; not in the mood to celebrate. My mind was spinning about everything still undone.

But something shifted for me at the celebration. I saw how much it meant to the staff who had worked so diligently to get us there. I saw the way our guests lit up when they walked the grounds and breathed in the possibility of Ayoku. That day reminded me: this was a win. And we needed it.

“Celebration is not frivolous — it is fuel.”

We underestimate the power of incremental wins because they don’t look like headlines. But when we gather our teams, raise a glass, or just exhale together, we’re doing more than marking progress. We are:

  • Giving our spirits permission to rest in joy.
  • Reminding each other that our labor is not in vain.
  • Creating moments of visibility that invite new partners and funders to believe alongside us.

In movements where burnout is the norm, these pauses are not just nice — they’re necessary.

“The small wins sustain the movement just as much as the big ones.”

I want to challenge you — whether you’re leading a nonprofit, a campaign, or a vision that feels bigger than you — to pause and notice the incremental wins. Don’t rush past them. Name them, share them, celebrate them. Because every step forward is evidence that the dream is alive.

Call to Reflection
